New “Mental Stress” Claims In Australia Are Almost Doubling

The National Occupational Health and Safety Commission figures show that new "mental stress" compensation claims in 2001-2002 made up 5 per cent of all claims (rising consistently from 3 per cent in 1997-98) and averaged 16 weeks lost per claim.

Those are the raw figures, but it's crucial to emphasise that this is only a small part of the whole picture, because the knock-on effects of stress are whopping, but very difficult to quantify - at least in terms of their impact on productivity and on the health dollar

Depression is a common problem among workers, costing the US $44 billion per year in lost productivity, according to a National Foundation for Brain Research survey of human resource professionals.

UK WORK STRESS WORK DEPRESSION CLAIMS Work stress work depression and work anxiety are a considerable medical problem and research funded by the Health and Safety Executive suggests that 1 in 5 employees consider themselves to be suffering from stress as a result of occupational factors. A high proportion of those employees go on to suffer from a debilitating psychological illness caused as a result of their employer's negligence. If an employer has failed to take adequate care for the psychological welfare and health of employees then the employer can be held liable in negligence and be ordered to pay damages.

• Leigh Farnell

Leigh Farnell has been a corporate performance consultant for the past 20 years consulting to over 300 companies in 40 different industries. His clients include Telstra, Australia Post, ANZ Bank, Deutsche Bank, Woodside, AMP, TAFE NSW, Lockwood Security Products and Westrac.

From the early 1980’s his Masters Degree research at UWA on stress and performance in the workplace has led him to consult, coach and teach extensively on the subject of ‘high performance-low distress’ workplaces.

Above all he is committed to the mission that ‘workplaces can well work for everyone.’

• Dr. Peter Symons

Dr. Peter Symons is a Veterinarian and advocate of anxiety and depression awareness.

He is passionate to educate and raise awareness of the warning signs of major depression.

After a serious medical issue Peter found he was suffering from major stress, anxiety and depression. Without the correct medical intervention he would not be here today.

With all his medical knowledge, he too was a victim of the lack of knowledge and the stigma that exists in society about stress, anxiety and depression.

In association with the Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria’s DARP programme funded by beyondblue, these three WA speakers have developed an integrated plan to help you and your clients meet the ever increasing new Stress Claims Challenge and How to Turn the Negative into a Positive.
